7 Steps To Introduce Chores To Your Childrenš§¹
Is it a good idea for children to have chores? Yes! It teaches them responsibility, resilienceĀ and problem-solving.Ā It will also pay off in the long runĀ because they will know how to look after themselves and their homes when they grow up.Ā
1. Choose age-appropriate chores for your child.Ā š§
Toddlers love to help their parents and siblings so it's worth encouraging them early on. It will helpĀ them to keep a positive attitude towards chores in the future.Ā
Toddlers can help tidy up their toys and make their beds. Older children can start setting and clearing the table, helping with groceries and the laundry. As they get older you can keep on introducing new chores (loading the dishwasher, washing machine, looking after pets, etc).
2. Don't overload kids with tasks!
RememberĀ to keep it fun and entertaining. Ā
3. Get a sticker chart.Ā ā
Kids will feel motivated and rewarded for their work. You can download one of ourĀ Free Reward Charts here.Ā
4. Make a chores chart.Ā āļø
If your kids can't read yet, they can draw their chores and place the chart where they choose.
5.Ā If your child is not interested in doing chores or refuses to do what you ask, try offering a choice of two. For example, they can either load the dishwasher or water the plants.Ā š¼
6.Ā It's also important to explain to a child what 'tidy' means as my toddler used to push all toys under the bed š thinking that a tidy floor means a tidy room.Ā
7.Ā If the kids end up making even more mess, don't overreact. Let them come up with ideas on how to clean it up. This will help them with problem-solving in the future.
