How to look after a senior cat
A domestic cat’s life expectancy depends on many factors, such as their overall health, diet, exercise and the living environment. In recent years, the average lifespan for a domestic cat has been shown to be about 12-14 years (that's equivalent to 64-72 human years). However, some pet cats can live to be around 20 years old (that's 96 human years!). While some breeds are known to live longer than others, the breed is definitely not a guarantee of a longer life.
Did you know that cats are considered mature once they reach 7-10 years and senior between the ages of 11 and 14? As your moggies age, they may need a bit of extra care to ensure they are comfortable and happy. Here are some tips on how to look after your senior cat and keep them feeling their best!
1. Regular veterinary check-ups
Firstly, it's important to take your elderly cat for regular check-ups at the vet. As they age, they may be more prone to health issues like arthritis, diabetes, and kidney disease. By seeing the vet on a routine basis, any potential problems can be caught early and addressed before they become bigger issues.
2. Provide a comfortable living environment
Your senior cat will also appreciate a comfortable living environment. You may want to provide ramps or steps to help your cat get to their favourite spots and a cosy bed with a soft, supportive surface can help them rest better. If your cat suffers from incontinence, make sure to protect their favourite spots in the house with PeapodMats to save yourself lots of cleaning!
3. Keep your cat mentally and physically stimulated
Although elderly cats may not be as active as they once were, it's still important to keep them mentally and physically stimulated. You can do this by providing toys that are easy to play with and encourage movement. Puzzle toys are also a great option for keeping your cat's mind active.
4. Monitor your senior cat's diet
As cats age, their dietary needs may change. Senior cats may need food with more protein and fewer calories to help maintain muscle mass and prevent weight gain. They may also benefit from food with added joint supplements to help with arthritis. Consult with your vet to determine the best diet for your cat's needs.
If you're using puzzle feeders as a toy, ensure to account for the extra treats in the daily food intake to prevent your moggy from overeating. Keep in mind that cat treats tend to be higher in calories!
5. Provide plenty of love and attention
Last but not least, make sure to give your furry companion lots of love and attention! Spending time cuddling and petting your cat can help them feel secure and happy. Keep an eye on their behaviour and body language, as any changes may be a sign of an underlying health issue.
By following these tips, you can help your elderly cat enjoy their golden years in comfort and happiness.
