Bedwetting and Stress: A Parent's Guide
The Impact of Stress and Anxiety on Bedwetting in Children
As a parent, it can be worrying to see your child start wetting the bed long after being dry for so long. But did you know that stress and anxiety can be a trigger for bedwetting? This is what the experts call “secondary enuresis”.
The connection between stress and bedwetting
The hormones in our bodies play a big role in regulating our night time urination. The hormone called vasopressin (also known as antidiuretic hormone or ADH) helps regulate urine production. However, this hormone can be easily affected by anxiety. When your child is under stress, their body may not produce enough ADH, leading to an overproduction of urine and an increased chance of bedwetting.
Stress and anxiety can also cause your child to drink too much before bed or forget to use the bathroom, leading to bedwetting.
Starting school and bedwetting
Starting school is a big milestone for your child, but it can also bring many changes and stress to their routine. This can cause bedwetting, which in this case, might be nothing to worry about and can often be treated with a little support.
Bedwetting and stress: a vicious cycle
It's important to note that bedwetting can also be stressful in - and of itself, especially for older kids. Sleepovers, trips, and family visits can all add extra stress and anxiety to the situation, leading to a vicious cycle...
Can teenagers and young adults experience bedwetting due to stress?
Yes, teens can also experience bedwetting, and the causes are often stress-related. If your teen is struggling with bedwetting, it's important to talk to them sensitively about their worries and reassure them that they are not alone.

You can reduce stress by being supportive, calm and loving to your child. The situation will be less stressful for you as well if you prepare well. It's best not to put your child back in pull-ups as it might embarrass them even more. But then how can you protect the mattress from accidents?
