How To Create A Potty Training Routine

Potty training takes time, and good preparation!

Once your child begins showing signs of readiness, you can start preparing for your potty training journey. The first step is talking to your little one, and reading books about potty training, so they know what to expect.
Don't forget to prepare your house too! You can find our simple shopping list here.

Now that you're prepared and everyone knows what to expect, here's an easy to follow, step-by-step routine that will help you progress with ease along your potty training journey:

  • 📅 Select a date on the calendar when you both decide you will begin potty training. Place it somewhere you both can see it so you won't forget. Make sure there are no big events around the date and that you'll both have plenty of free time.
  • 🩲 On the morning of the big day, take the night time nappy off and put the big underwear on. Make it exciting, it's their graduation!
  • Every 20 minutes take your little one to the potty. Don't ask them if they need to go as children are always too busy to go to the loo! If your child refuses to stay on a potty, try distracting them by reading a book or playing with toys for few minutes.
  • 🚽 Make sure the potty is always visible and easily accessed by your little one. Having one in the bathroom and another in living room also helps. Your little one is less likely to forget about it if it's right in front of them!
  • 🚗❌ Avoid taking too many, or too long, trips on the big day. Stay near home so you can continue taking your child to the potty every 20 minutes. If you have to take a trip, and you're worried about accidents, you can use a pull up. But remember to explain to your child that it's only for outside, and don't forget to remove it when you return home.
  • ⏰ Over the next few days, stretch the breaks between potty trips to 40 minutes, then to 1 hour, and so on. You can use a timer for this if it's easier. This way you will both know when it's potty time!

▶ If you're spending a lot of time washing your sofas, beds or carpets try using PeapodMats to waterproof your home and absorb liquid fast!

If your child is having frequent accidents in less than 20 minutes, over a few days, they might not be ready for potty training just yet. Check out our Signs Your Child is Ready here.

Does the job!

This is great for keeping the bed sheet/mattress dry, however we still have the issue of the duvet getting wet if my daughter has an accident so I still have to strip half the bed. I question how comfortable it is to lay on as the material is a little rough but no complaints from my daughter. One thing I will say is my daughter gets very hot in bed laying on it, since using it she has sweated most nights which is a bit of a worry with overheating.

Hi Tamsin,

Thank you for your review! We're so happy to read that PeapodMat protects your daughter's bedsheet and mattress!

We're sorry to hear about your daughter getting hot at night. PeapodMats don't have a layer of plastic and are breathable so overheating shouldn't happen. Are you using any additional mattress protectors on your daughter's bed?

Please get in touch with us at if you require any assistance!

Brilliant! Got my 4yo out of nappies within a couple of nights.

Perfect. I'd been at the end of my tether with my 4yo daughter who didn't want to let go of pull ups so invested in this mat. It's mega absorbent, and non slip and comfy to lay on. It washed well and air dries quickly. Within a couple of nights of use with accidents, she's night dry! I can't believe how much it helped, I wish we had bought it much sooner.

Love it

I now have 3 of these. 1 for each of my children I just love them. Deafintly worth investing in one for you children.

Hello Roxy,
It's great to hear that you're happy with PeapodMats!
Thank you for your feedback and all the best,

Great- but does move about

Covers a great amount of a single bed. It stays put but not all night- however, my son is a wriggly worm at night and moves non stop! The material is great and it feels really nice and soft. He loves his “new big boy sheet”

Arrived in a couple of days. Stays in place on the bed as per instructions. Washes well, only issue is that it takes longer to dry than expected. Thankfully only washed once before use, no accidents yet.

It's great to hear that your PeapodMat stays in place and washes well.
Thank you for your feedback and all the best,
